Charles Hilton Architects is pleased to partner with the Haitian Health Foundation in the construction of “Happy Houses” for the needy in area of Jeremie, Haiti. The Haitian Health Foundation is a Connecticut based non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the poorest citizens in the Western Hemisphere through healthcare, education and community development projects. Housing for many in rural Haiti is deplorable. Families often live together in small rickety shacks of cardboard, tin, rags and straw with dirt floors. Vermin and insects are impossible to control and roofs regularly leak or are blown away.
The Happy House program replaces these shacks with concrete block houses with cement floors, a tin roof, windows and doors. Recipients are selected by a vote of Village Committees to ensure that only the neediest families receive them. Whenever possible, recipients participate in the construction. A Happy House provides humane living conditions, improved sanitation and dignity for their owners. In an ongoing program, Charles Hilton Architects is supporting the construction of one Happy House each quarter of every year since the company’s inception.
